Any leftover decorations or tealights also pose serious risks if swallowed by curious wildlife.

As pumpkins take a while to break down, they can haunt country parks for a long time, upsetting delicate woodland ecosystems and having a grave effect on plants, fungi and the soil.

What’s more, discarded pumpkins are often left to rot on pathways, turning them into slippery hazards for unsuspecting walkers - a real Halloween horror story for visitors trying to enjoy the countryside safely.

We are being urged to carve out some time for extra Halloween fun instead by giving their pumpkins a second life. I don't remember anyone else doing this at the time and I'm sure we were the first to do this around town.

The Malt & Hops (now the Island Restaurant), was managed by John and Jayne Collins and was one of the first town centre pubs back in the 80's to obtain a late licence. The pub was formally known as The Dirty Duck and underwent an extension and refurbishment in 1982. They started late disco nights in 1984 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights which proved very popular indeed. The queues to get in often stretched back to the traffic lights or passed the Vets next door. It was great to DJ there and the video screens were a novel attraction at the time.

The song’s controversial music video was directed by the Storm Thorgerson, which further fuelled its notoriety. Thorgerson, known for his work with Pink Floyd, created a video that sparked debates at the time due to its explicit full-frontal nudity. As Thorgerson’s visuals often did, it toed the line between art and provocation. Some defended the video, stating that it was done for "artistic reasons" and was far from gratuitous. He added in an interview with Record Mirror that guitarist Carlos Alomar had jokingly called him a "sexist pig," but later admitted to finding the video wonderful.

The video certainly raised eyebrows, but it wasn’t the first, nor the last 1980s video to push the boundaries. Others shown at the time included 'Sledgehammer' by Peter Gabriel, “Take On Me” – a-ha, anything by Prince, Madonna, etc etc., and of course Michael Jackson. I remember how pleased were were at the time being the first to show 'Thriller', after it exclusively appeared on Channel 4 - but again no one danced, just stood still and looked!

The Imagination video ends where a lady suddenly ages, which leaves you uncertain what that actually means, perhaps something supernatural? The ambiguity leads to diverse interpretations, which makes the video a source of more intrigue.

The track was very slow to climb the UK single chart. With a heavy push by EMI records it was reissued in 1986 and become one of the popular tracks of the year, frequently played in the pubs and clubs, on mainstream radio and even made its way into an advertisement for Barclays Bank and was featured in the 1987 film Ghost Chase.

His career may not of reached the dizzying heights of some others who started out then, but his contributions to 1980s pop music shouldn’t be overlooked. If you never did go to the Malt & Hops Stafford in the mid 1980's, unlucky - or didn't get to see the original 'uncensored' video from 1985 - good luck trying to find it!

Thanks to : I grew up in the 1980's, The Custom Sound Crew 1976- 2000, Vince Ward (Sound & Vison, Oxford Gardens Stafford) and everyone who danced the night away at The Malt & Hops back then!

Many of us who experience symptoms may be confused about what it is that they’ve come down with. Perhaps I was tempting fate?

Then last week I noticed that I wasn't quite feeling myself. A constant runny nose, sore eyes, my chest was wheezy and then a cough that got worse (especially when lying down). Not to mention a headache, sweating, sore throat and raspy voice and a feeling I was running on empty with no energy at all. Strangely also, I was getting bad dreams, like constantly being chased, loosing my phone or feeling trapped. Some of this seemed kind of familiar from when covid first struck back in 2020.

If your concerned, it's always best to seek out professional medical advice of course, like I did.

I have a low immune system due to other health issues and medications, so I'm even more prone to picking things up. After doing a covid test (first one for ages), it showed up positive. It seems that I have a 'mild' dose of the latest Covid-19 variant which is accounting for around 30% of cases here right now.

The current NHS guildelines to isolate after a positive Covid test are clear, to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for five days after the day you did your test. You should also avoid people who are more likely to get seriously ill from infections/viruses, such as people with weakened immune systems. Don't be tempted to 'battle on' and continue to go to work, think of others and don't spread your germs so putting friends and colleagues at risk.

The symptoms of a cold, flu and covid do overlap, but there are some differences. They also can cause no symptoms or cause mild or severe symptoms. Because the symptoms can overlap, testing can still be done to see if you have COVID-19 or the flu. You also can have both diseases at the same time, like I did. The NHS advises that many symptoms are similar, so it's best to get advice from NHS 111 online or seek out an appointment with a healthcare professional, especially if you're worried or symptoms worsen. The NHS provides advice on managing symptoms at home and knowing when to seek urgent care. This is particularly important for people at higher risk, such as those aged 60 or over, pregnant, or with chronic heath conditions or a weakened immune system.

There's always more advice to be found online at https://www.nhs.uk/

I hope to be back on air soon, a big thanks to Ryan Kennedy who has been covering Vibe 1's mid-morning show while I've been off poorly, if you've been feeling unwell with something similar to me - I hope you are feeling better soon!

Ozzy Osbourne, the frontman of Black Sabbath, pioneers of heavy metal, has died at the age of 76.
Tributes have flooded in from around the world and locally where he's remembered fondly because of his local connections.

I'm sure you were left shocked and stunned when you heard the news yesterday (Tuesday 22 July) that Ozzy has gone.

I guess even more so coming just weeks after the band played their farewell gig in front of 42,000 fans, in his home city of Birmingham at Villa Park.

The news is everywhere and everyone seems to be talking about it. Also getting asked to DJ at 21st's/engagements/weddings etc., events in St. George's Social Club and even sometimes on the wards for patients at SGH. I don't know how I did it, but I was much younger then I guess.

The reunion was a thoroughly enjoyable experience with a great atmosphere and lovely people.

Linda said, "It was lovely taking a step back in time and sharing memories with old friends and colleagues. There was controversy nationally at the time and some punk rock gigs were being stopped by local councils and some venues were finding that their insurance was being refused due to concerns about public safety and order. The Sex Pistols' had caused outrage during their appearance on the Bill Grundy Show a few months earlier (Queen had apparently been booked to appear, but Freddie developed toothache and pulled out), this interview marked the public's first widespread exposure to punk rock and it's rebellious attitude and controversial lyrics.

In Glasgow, a stage invasion during a Stranglers concert led the council to perceive punk rock as a threat to public order and effectively ban it from the city. Also a scheduled Clash concert in Belfast was cancelled after insurance cover was withdrawn, leading to a "battle of Bedford Street" with some punks causing trouble.

Fortunately for Stafford, the Students Union stepped in from North Staffs Polytechnic at Beaconside and the show was hurriedly rearranged and staged in 'The Refectory', just a few hundred metres away from where Vibe 1's studios are now, on the former University campus. The place was crammed to the rafters on a hot and sweaty Monday night and a total sell out. I remember there was a lot of pushing and shoving in front of the stage as the band came on and a lot of crazy foam being squirted about, but the event went off without any trouble.

It's argued that The Damned (Dave Vanian vocals, Brian James, guitar, Captain Sensible bass and later lead guitarist and drummer Rat Scabies), were the first punk rock band from the UK to release a single - "New Rose" in 1976 They went on to release 9 singles that charted.

The Sex Pistols never did play a gig in Stafford, the closest they got was just down the A518 in Newport when they played at 'The Village' nightclub and using another name - S.P.O.T's - Sex Pistols On Tour.

Credit to the Students Union for moving so quickly to put the show on.

Fond memories of interesting times!

https://www.vibe1.uk/blogs/ray-crowther/post/local-communities-and-historic-landmarks-commemorating-ve-80-in-stafford/
Local communities and historic landmarks commemorating VE 80 in Stafford
2025-04-30T06:54:00+00:00
Street parties, activities at historic buildings, a church service and event in an award-winning park are part of the 80th commemorations marking the end of World War 2.

Residents and organisations have taken advantage of fees being waived by Stafford Borough Council to close roads for street parties marking Victory in Europe and Victory over Japan.

A VE Day themed children’s workshop is taking place at the Ancient High House in Stafford town centre - with the venue also holding an exhibition on the lives of local men telling their stories through medals and historical artefacts. He played a significant role in promoting and popularising Northern Soul music, helping to build a passionate and dedicated community of fans. George was well known for his unique style of commentary and flamboyant extravagant dress sense. He often wore his designer sunglasses when it was cloudy and raining. Known for dressing up as a banana, a chimney sweep, a traditional Mexican and many more...

I first met him back in the mid 1980's. George was Station Manager at Hospital Radio Stafford when I was a young fresh faced Staff Nurse at Stafford Hospital and had aspirations to get into radio. He must have seen something in me as he quickly gave me my first radio show. A year later I was invited to join Signal Radio in Stoke-on-Trent and there was George again and our friendship blossomed. He was always on hand and gave me great encouragement.

His commentaries on local radio during the John Rudge glory days were so popular that they spawned a VHS video “The Roof’s Fallen In '' and some of his commentaries have passed into Port Vale legend. It is safe to say he had many memorable moments behind the microphone. It was a pleasure to work with him many times, especially as co-commentator when we covered Wolverhampton Wanderers games back in 2004 - 2007. We would often share the driving for the away games and I remember we nearly ended up in Bournemouth when we should have been at Southampton. George said " trust me, I know the way". But there wasn't a football ground anywhere around the country where they didn't know George.

George was also there when we originally launched Stafford FM from our Gaol Mews studios in 2001. He was instrumental in setting up our Stafford Rangers coverage and also presented a Sunday night show as Andy Best 'playing the best of the rest' and helped us with local news bulletins.

He was always there during my time at Signal Radio, often walking into the studio by saying "what's happening then Razza".

After returning to Stafford FM after 3 years away due to illness in January. George was my first guest on the mid-morning show to talk about his new book 'Follow The Bear 5000, A Good Sports Lifetime'. I usually allocate 15-20 minutes to chat to my guests, but George was still going an hour and 10 minutes later! His first football report for radio was covering Stafford Rangers at Marston Road and he returned there to do his 5000th game. What an amazing achievement! I'm just so pleased he managed to get his book out before we lost him.

Times like this many memories come flooding back of our time together.

The service today at Stafford Crematorium was so well attended by the good and the great from the media and the sporting world, it was standing room only in the chapel. It was an amazing send off and I'm sure George looking down would have loved it.

George Andrews was a 'one off', a maverick and a true legend, he will be greatly missed.

My thoughts are with his wife Christine, his family and his friends at this sad time.
