Beforehand, as I always do, I had real doubts about going, especially after I had just visited the dentist for emergency treatment. I thought It will be such a hassle, will anyone remember me? Will I see anyone I want to see? Will I recognise anyone, after all, it's been so many years since I last put on a nurses uniform.
For me as you get older, there are two kinds of people: those who become more finicky and judgmental as they get older, and those who are less judgmental and forgiving with age. I think the people who attended this reunion tend to be the latter. These occasions also reinforce being grateful to still be here and healthy enough to attend, as the conversations often lead to talk of 'absent friends'. This is what made the reunion such a unique and special event meeting up again with so many 'old' colleagues.
I was very late getting there after a lengthy dental appointment so I missed being part of the 'official photos', but when I walked through the door the atmosphere was buzzing with the sound of laughter and conversation. I was greeted by smiling faces.
Some people haven't changed at all (maybe just a bit greyer), I found it so easy to chat to people I hadn't seen for decades, like it was only last week. It was fascinating to hear where life had taken them since our time together. As student nurses during three years of training, working together, living in the nurses home or flats on site, socialising together and at the end of it all qualifying together, close bonds develop.
I also worked in SGI Stores at the Staffordshire General Infirmary in Stafford (SGI) before nurse training and as a Staff Nurse after qualifying, meeting and working with some great people along the way. I was also fortunate enough to be at most of the parties held back then, as I was also working as a DJ while at the NHS. Also getting asked to DJ at 21st's/engagements/weddings etc., events in St. George's Social Club and even sometimes on the wards for patients at SGH. I don't know how I did it, but I was much younger then I guess.
The reunion was a thoroughly enjoyable experience with a great atmosphere and lovely people.
Linda said, "It was lovely taking a step back in time and sharing memories with old friends and colleagues. I cannot wait to do it all over again! - and old colleagues, that are thinking about coming next time - don't hesitate make it a priority and come, it was an amazing atmosphere. Thank you George for making it possible".
I'm already looking forward to next year's get- together. Over time and advancing years we lose many friends and people we went to school or previously worked with. A reunion is a unique chance to see these people again for maybe just one more time. Now more than ever, it’s easy to keep in touch without leaving your laptop, tablet or smartphone. However, nothing can replace face-to-face, physically seeing someone again with the sounds and touch of the people we respect.
There is more to life than a smartphone.
Thanks to George for putting on such a special event and to The Swan Hotel, Greengate Street Stafford, for making us feel so welcome.
