Crowds gathered at Katharine House Hospice on Sunday, 7 December, to remember loved ones at the charity's annual Light up a Life service.
The event is a central part of the hospice’s long-standing Light Up a Life appeal, now in its 26th year and one of the charity’s biggest fundraisers.
Supporters filled the hospice’s Weston Road grounds to see the lights switch on and listen to carols and readings. Each light is dedicated to a loved one in return for a donation.
Javier Gonzalez-Fritz the hospice’s Family Support Team Leader, said: “Light Up a Life is always a deeply moving experience for our community. Every light holds a story and special memories. We’re so thankful to all who take part, as dedicating a light means remembering someone precious while also helping us support others facing extremely difficult times.”
Gaynor Naik attended the service in memory of her husband Adrian, who was cared for by the hospice. She said:
“Being part of Light Up a Life means so much to me. It gives me a chance to remember my husband and to stand with others who understand what that loss feels like. The service was beautiful and keeps Adrian’s memory shining.”
Nichola Smith, Senior Hospice Care Manager, who attended the service added:
“This service is one of the most meaningful in our year. Seeing our community come together in such love and remembrance is incredibly special.
“It’s wonderful to see so much support and it shows how much the hospice means to people locally. We are grateful to everyone who has contributed to the appeal, raising a wonderful £37,000 so far. These funds play a vital role in enabling our expert, compassionate care for those living with incurable illness and their families.”
The lights were sponsored by Staffordshire-based marketing consultancy MMS Marketing, which has supported the event for 22 years.
Danielle Mitton, Managing Director of MMS Marketing, said: “We’re proud to have supported Katharine House Hospice and the Light Up a Life appeal for more than two decades. It’s a cause very close to our hearts, and every year we’re reminded of how important this service is to so many local families. We hope this year’s appeal is another tremendous success, as every donation truly helps the hospice continue its vital work in the community.”
The Light up a Life appeal continues throughout the festive season and into the New Year.
