County comes together to #LightUpTheNight and remind people they’re not alone over Christmas

People, businesses and community organisations throughout Staffordshire are encouraged to spread the word that support is available to those struggling during the festive period. Staffordshire County Council has once again partnered with Staffordshire Samaritans to light windows and buildings green across the county on Sunday 21 December, the longest night of the year.

The campaign aims to remind everyone that help is always available, even on Christmas Day.

This year’s campaign will already see much of Staffordshire lighting up green, including Stafford’s Shire Hall and the National Memorial Arboretum, while numerous businesses and organisations have signed up to support the campaign, such as GXO Screwfix Distribution Centres and Keele University.

Martin Rogerson, Cabinet Member for Health and Care at Staffordshire County Council, said:

“While the holidays are a happy time for many people, there are those who struggle during the Christmas period. That is why campaigns like this one, letting everyone know that they have someone they can talk to if they feel isolated, is so important.

“I am hugely encouraged by the support this campaign has already received. I urge everyone to visit their local library, collect their free poster and green tealight and shine a light through their window on the longest night.

“Let’s all share the crucial message that no one has to face this season alone.”

Damon Preece, Samaritans Regional Officer, said:

“Samaritans recognise Christmas and New Year can be a time of expectations and people can feel pressured into joining in, or appearing happy when that isn't the case.

“Samaritans’ volunteers provide a non-judgemental ear so people can share what's on their mind and hopefully work through the difficulties they are facing.

“Anyone can call Samaritans on 116 123, which is a free call and won't show on your phone bill. You can even call us without credit.

“Our volunteers are there to listen not only through the festivities, but throughout the year, 24/7.”

Anyone who collects a poster and tealight are also encouraged to share a picture on social media, tagging Staffordshire County Council and including the hashtag #LightUpTheNight to spread awareness even further.

People can pick up their packs and green LED tealights from their local libraries and more information about the campaign is available on the Light Up the Longest Night webpage.
