Councillors in Stafford have asked for further information on the savings they could make for taxpayers if they are to buy their own base.
Members of the council were due to discuss a proposal to buy the Civic Centre at a meeting last night (Tuesday 3 December) in a move that could save the local authority money in the future.
But leader of the council, Aidan Godfrey, told councillors they would defer a decision while awaiting final independent financial advice.
Work has been taking place to ensure the purchase of the building would be good value for money for local taxpayers.
The Civic Centre currently has a lease which has more than 50 years to run and is subject to reviews over this period which could increase the rent. Buying the building would also make it easier for the council to access grants to make the property more environmentally friendly and reduce running costs.
As well as borough council functions, the four-storey building houses other agencies including NHS services.
The report to the meeting of the council was confidential because of commercial sensitivities.
Leader of the council, Aidan Godfrey, said “This is a very important financial decision for the council and we need to proceed with the very latest advice.
“Unfortunately, the final piece of advice has not been received in time for this meeting so it is sensible that we defer this item to a future council meeting which I will look to arrange as soon as possible.”
